Swimmer James Guy, who is a former student at Millfield School in Street, has rounded off a brilliant Tokyo Olympics 2021 for him, as he claimed silver in the 4x100m medley relay this morning (August 1).

The team of Luke Greenbank, Adam Peaty, James Guy and Duncan Scott broke the European record on their way to silver, with only the USA, in a world record, in front of them.

It caps a spectacular Games at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre for the GB swimmers, who will leave with four gold medals and eight medals in all.

That tops the previous best return from 1908, matching the four golds won in London, but topping the seven medals from those Games.

It was a second successive silver medal in this event and took Britain's tally in the relays at the swimming to three, another measure of the strength in depth of the squad, which includes former Crispin School student Brodie Williams.

James Guy, who is 25, said: "This week for British swimming has been unbelievable, medals all over the place.

"We've had a great week, we missed out on gold but they broke the world record and we've played our part."

World record holder

These Games have brought plenty of success for James Guy, particularly in the relay races, as he took gold in the 4x200m freestyle relay, and helped set a world record in claiming gold in the mixed 4x100m medley relay.

In the world record success, he swam 50 seconds dead on the butterfly leg to put Team GB in complete control, with the decision to withdraw from his men's 100m butterfly race to be ready for the relays paying off.

He said: "It's my fastest split ever by 0.5 seconds.

"Gold medal, world record, you can't beat that, especially when it's for the team. I was quite upset [about pulling out of the 100m butterfly] – I cried again, obviously – but it has paid off and it was worth it to go and do that time."
