It was another haul of Gold medals today (July 28) in Tokyo and local school Millfield could not be more proud.

James Guy, who was at the Street school, competed in the second leg of the 4x200m freestyle relay at the Olympic pool.

Tom Dean led the team out, touching third at the end of his 200m, before James overhauled the swimmers in front to put Team GB in the lead and 18-year-old Matt Richards – who pulled out of the individual 100m freestyle event to focus on the relay – maintained the advantage.

That gave three-time Olympic silver medallist Scott an anchor-leg lead that he never looked likely to relinquish, finally securing that elusive gold when he touched for a European record time of 6:58.58.

Twenty five year old James, who relocated to Somerset from Bury, Lancashire in order to pursue his swimming aspirations at Millfield Prep School and Millfield, said after the win: " As a kid, winning an Olympic gold medal was my absolute dream and to do it after 25 years is pretty emotional.

"With these lads here, we're the best freestylers in the world – my teammate [Tom Dean] and Duncan Scott getting first and second, it's just amazing how things progress.

"Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte won in Rio, now we're the Olympic champions and that's a dream come true."

Meantime rower Helen Glover, who also spent time at Millfield, has today (July 28) been talking about qualifying for the finals.

Thirty five year old Helen finished second in a time of 6:49.39 in the first semi-final to qualify for the Women's Pair final, with Polly Swann.

She said: " We feel we should be here as a crew, so it's not a huge celebration.

"But in other way of course we are celebrating it, as a story of how far we have come. But it is also a story about how far we have to go. We are excited for the next 24 hours.

"We felt quite calm. Everyone wants to be on the start line tomorrow morning. It is a very competitive event, you wouldn't have written this final at the beginning of the year, but that is what is exciting."

Helen is mum of three, including eighteen month old twins. She said: " Lots of parents have been in touch with me, and said this has changed their perspective on parenthood.

"Also on how they want to bring up their little girls and boys, in terms of what they can do and achieve.

"There is a small part of me representing those people, and a large part representing my children."

On her husband, broadcaster Steve Backshall watching, she added: " Steve probably didn't sleep all night. He'll have been up all night watching, then the kids will wake up at about five o'clock, so he won't have slept last night!"
