Emily Horridge, originally from Street, is World Champion of Downhill Mountain Biking.

"I always enjoyed a good walk or mountain bike ride up on Street Hill," said Emily, the extraordinarily persevering and resilient mountain biker.

Today (August 31), in an exclusive interview with Street Nub News, she added that: "The views are magnificent and the old oak trees are so impressive."

After being made the World Champion of Downhill Mountain Biking earlier this month, Emily has been mulling over what she would like to say to the people of Street, and women in general who want to start a new sport.

"It's never too late to start a new activity," she said.

"Having been crowned Master DH World Champion at the age of 41, never let anyone tell you you're too old!

"But I'd most like to thank my husband, for the unwavering support also - and to my sponsors, such as SCOTT Bikes."

Speaking about the moment she won, she said: "I was so pleased. I'd been working towards this race all year, and all of my preparations paid off.

"I used to quietly get on with the sport I love while in Street. It's a very individual sport, that's also very unusual. So it's different to belonging to a club.

"As for living in Street, I actually relocated to the French Alps around ten years ago, but I've been in competitive mountain biking all my life.

"Many years ago I would ride and train down at Triscombe Stone on the Quantocks, or up at Rowberrow Warren on the Mendips."

She speaks fondly of her time in Street and said: "As someone who used to travel the length and breadth of the country to race, I always loved how easy it was to get to the motorway but at the same time we were lucky enough to live in a quiet place very close to the countryside, and also not too far from the coast."
