The toughest street food competition in the world is coming to Street this April, as Clarks Village is playing host.
Ten of the best traders in the UK will fight it out in the South West heat of the 2020 British Street Food Awards supported by Hellmann's.
The crowds will vote for their winner, with some expert advice from the area's journalists, foodies and top chefs.
The prize? Bragging rights, big time. With the opportunity to represent the South West at the national finals in London – and even go on to represent Britain at the European Street Food Awards in Sweden – it's a prize that genuinely changes lives.
MEATliquor, the winner of the 2009 Awards, now have ten restaurants around the country. Baked In Brick and Wingmans, winners in 2017, have also recently opened their first establishments.
The South West heats will take place in the Central Gardens at Clarks Village. Hosted at the end of the Easter holidays, on the weekend of April 18 and 19, Clarks Village will become the centre of the street food world, with guests tasting and voting for their favourite BSFA competition dishes, as well some of the best craft beers the region has to offer.
"We're delighted to be hosting a heat from the British Street Food Awards at Clarks Village," said Chris Davis, centre manager at Clarks Village.
"The awards are renowned for being a vibrant and exciting time across the country, and we're looking forward to sharing everyone's passion for exceptional food and drink here in the centre.
"We've seen a huge trend in the popularity for street food in the UK and across our food vendors, and look forward to uncovering some delicious dishes in the heart of Somerset."
This year will also see the introduction of the Award for Most Sustainable Trader, sponsored by Hellmann's.
The winner, selected by a panel of judges at the British finals, will be crowned based on traders' scores in a survey audited by the Sustainable Restaurant Association.
Hellmann's and British Street Food are working together to reduce food waste, and in 2020 will join the organisers, along with NCASS and Eighth Plate, in ensuring that the BSFA finals are a zero waste event.
"Hellmann's helps people to enjoy good, honest food for the simple pleasure it is – without worry or waste," said Alanah Wilkinson from Hellmann's.
"We believe that good food shouldn't cost the earth, which is why we champion the use of sustainably sourced ingredients and are on a journey to eradicate single use plastic. We look forward to meeting the many traders at the awards who share our values."
With street food airing prime time on TV, and receiving big city investment, the business is clearly changing.
"This is the 11th year of the awards," said Richard Johnson, founder of the BSFAs.
"We've seen a huge change since it was established. Destinations like Clarks Village show how we eat differently now.
"We don't want a fixed starter-main course-dessert menu any more – we want a bit of this and a bit of that.
"It's flirty, low-commitment dining, and it's so much more relaxed. Street food is making the world a better place."
