Street is a place full of history, whether that be going back hundreds of years or a handful of decades.

Today we launch a new Back In Time feature, where Street Nub News looks at people, places and events that have shaped our village.

In the first article, Laura Linham takes a look at the High Street in the early 1900s.

Here's a photo that's familiar and unfamiliar at once.

This postcard shows the far end of Street High Street and despite the century that has passed, is still instantly recognisable.

Taken in the early 1900s, it shows a group of people standing in the road - something that wouldn't be particularly advisable today - just outside where Wessex Vets now stands.

While the businesses have changed over the years, and cars now line the street, the road and buildings are still easy to pick out.

You can easily pick out the buildings that house David Titchener's photographic studio, the Indian and Thai restaurants, and the funeral directors.

In the distance, you can see the what's now a hair salon, tattoo parlour and the vinyl shop, as well as the familiar arches of the car spares business and home improvements business.

The shop you can see on the left was sadly destroyed by a colossal fire some years ago, and now the YMCA building stands in its place.

While there are so many parts of Street that have changed beyond recognition over the years, there's something reassuring about just how this little stretch of road has stayed almost exactly the same.
