Sixth Form student Yuhka Machino from Millfield School in Street has been selected for one of only six places in the UK team for the 2020 International Mathematical Olympiad.

The competition, which sees children from more than 100 countries compete to solve complex mathematical problems, will be hosted by Russia, but held online due to current travel restrictions, in September.

Yuhka recently won a bronze medal at the 2020 Romanian Master of Mathematics Competition in Bucharest in February.

At the competition, Yuhka competed as part of the UK team who placed fifth in the team competition with Russia taking the top spot, followed by Ukraine, USA and Bulgaria.

Yuhka placed joint 43rd in the competition out of more than 120 of the best young mathematicians in the world.

More recently, Yuhka won a gold medal at the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad coming second overall (out of 195 contestants from 53 countries) with a strong score.

The 16-year-old also competed as part of the Millfield Mathematics Team, winning a place in the final of the UK Mathematics Trust's National Senior Team Maths Challenge.
