Street Fire Station is asking members of the public to refrain from letting off sky lanterns this evening (April 16) as part of the thanks for key workers.

Firefighters at the station have shared the Facebook post by Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service urging residents to not let off the lanterns, as has been suggested by some.

A spokesperson said: "It has been well publicised that people are being asked to buy sky lanterns, light them and set them free, in support of our NHS staff and amazing carers.

"Please do not do this. Lanterns can easily cause a significant fire.

"A better, safer way to show your support is to stay at home. We do not recommend their use due to the fire hazards and risks they pose to property, crops, livestock and the community.

"Please support our NHS and carers by clapping and not requiring us to attend emergencies."
