Tenants who find themselves struggling to pay for their rent are encouraged to contact Mendip District Council's Housing Options Team for advice and support, as early as possible, to help prevent them becoming homeless.

The Council's experienced and knowledgeable Officers are on hand to assist tenants facing financial difficulties, and find solutions to ensure residents do not become homeless.

The historic Bishop's Barn and Wells Recreation Ground are to be returned to the City of Wells.

At a meeting of Mendip District Council's Cabinet last night (Monday 7th February), members approved the transfer of trusteeship of the Wells Recreation Ground charity to Wells City Council. At transfer, Mendip District Council will no longer have any legal or financial responsibility for the Trust.

The projects that have been awarded money from the Mendip Climate and Ecological Emergency Fund, have now been announced.

Projects selected include, installing solar panels on a farm, establishing hedgerows, retrofitting a community hub and installing bat, bird and insect boxes, to name a few.

Cancer charity We Hear You (WHY) said goodbye to Chief Executive Officer Melissa Hillier on 31st January, as she takes up a new role at The Research Institute for the Care of Older People (RICE) in Bath.

Melissa Hillier joined the charity in 2015 and has overseen a significant expansion of the charity's services and staff, as well as a rebranding project that saw Positive Action on Cancer (PAC) become We Hear You (WHY) in 2016.

Cancer charity We Hear You (WHY) is once again offering 'WHYoutdoors', a free six-week nature-based therapy for people living with and beyond cancer in Wanstrow, near Frome, and Bath Skyline. The next courses run in Wanstrow from Wednesday 9th March to 13th April and in Bath from Thursday 21st April to 26th May. Sessions run one day per week from 10am to 3pm, in the company of two WHYoutdoors leaders, who are also WHY counsellors.

WHYoutdoors facilitator Barbara Gonzalez says: "WHYoutdoors aims to help participants develop a closer relationship to nature, deepen their own self-awareness and share their experiences with peers making meaningful and supportive connections. "

An evening for local landlords is being held on the 17th March and is open to all existing and prospective landlords across Somerset.

Guest speakers include a local solicitor and other prominent experts who will provide an insight into the Private Rented Sector and details of forthcoming regulation and changes to the industry.

The pandemic has inspired Clarks Village in Somerset to upskill its team and prioritise mental health to enhance guest experience.

The Street shopping outlet has committed to mental health training for all of its 41 staff and is rolling out further investment in its people with additional training in first aid, autism, dementia and communication. Ten new native coppice trees have been planted by Thatchers Cider as part of the Queen's Green Canopy campaign to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee.

Martin Thatcher and his daughter Eleanor Thatcher planted the trees, which are accompanied by a commemorative plaque, alongside the popular Strawberry Line and adjacent to the family run cider mill at Myrtle Farm in Sandford.

A Somerset council and housing association have defended proposals to build new low-cost homes near Street Cemetery.
