Street rugby star Ewan Richards looking forward to being coached at Bath by Luke Charteris
An up-and-coming rugby star from Street says he is looking forward to gaining experience from former Welsh international Luke Charteris.
Ewan Richards was recently selected for the Bath Rugby senior academy, and the former Crispin School and Millfield student says he is particularly looking forward to being coached by Charteris, who played for Wales 74 times and is now a specialist line-out coach at Bath.
Ewan is currently living at Farleigh House, which is Bath's training headquarters in Farleigh Hungerford, but says he gets back to Street to see his family often.
He told Street Nub News: "I've always supported Bath as a boy, as my whole family, especially my Dad, supports them.
"For me I'm particularly looking forward to being coached by the likes of Luke Charteris as he's an ex-international player and also played in the same position as me. I feel this is going to really develop my game.
"The Street community has helped me as I wouldn't of been able to go to Millfield if it wasn't for a local police officer who's a family friend.
"They were talking to a member of staff, which lead to us getting in contact with the school and attending a scholarship day."
Ewan started playing rugby at the age of five at Tor RFC in Glastonbury as his dad Neil is a big rugby fan and coached there.
"At the age of 10 I joined Wells RFC, where I had Nick Heath who coached me and really helped me develop my rugby ability, and encouraged me to play for Somerset when I was 15," Ewan said.
"I'm really excited to be joining Bath's senior academy on a three-year contract, and I have represented the club since under-15 level. During my first year at under-18s I was also captain.
"I'm mainly a second row, however, I did play back row for my school last year. With the position I play I need to be as big and strong as I can, but also stay fit.
"During the off season Bath give me a fitness programme to stick to, as it'll prepare me for the upcoming season."
Ewan says that if he wasn't playing rugby he would have attended university to study sport, specifically rugby so he could still be involved with the game whether that would be coaching or analysing.
He said: "I would like to say a massive thank you to all my family and friends for the continued support and especially my parents for taking me all around the country to training and games as I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for them."
