The chairman of Street Parish Council has welcomed the news that the government is giving the Mendip area more than £100,000 to help high streets recover in the district.
Peter Goater, who is also a Mendip district councillor, has said that support for the safe reopening of Street High Street will always be welcomed.
Yesterday (May 25), the government announced it would be giving Mendip District Council £102,000 to help it revitalise the area's high streets following the coronavirus crisis.
Mr Goater told Street Nub News: "Street Parish Council welcome any additional funding from central government to support the safe reopening of our high street.
"We need to enable people to get back to work and customers to shop safely when the time is right.
"We need to do this by enabling social distancing and encouraging residents to walk or cycle to the High Street shops. The parish council looks forward to working closely with Mendip District Council to enable this."
Mr Goater was also full of praise for the village's community support group, which has been bringing together the community during the coronavirus crisis.
"The parish council would like to thank all parts of Street Community Support Group for the great work they have done," he said.
"This includes food bank activity from the Salvation Army, Meals on Wheels weekly from the Baptist Church, and shopping and prescription pickup and delivery through community volunteers and Millfield School.
"There are also weekly food packages being delivered to vulnerable families again with volunteers and Millfield school.
"Volunteers have also been keeping in touch with the lonely. VE Day was celebrated by the over 80s who live in Street with scones, jam and cream delivered to each door as a lovely surprise."
