Firefighters from Street were among multiple crews called to tackle a barn blaze in Podimore yesterday afternoon (July 3) in which 300 tonnes of hay, plus farm equipment, were destroyed.
Just before 4pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control received multiple calls reporting a barn on fire in Church Street, Podimore.
Crews from Somerton, Yeovil and Martock were sent to this incident as well as a water carrier from Yeovil and the incident support unit from Martock.
Upon arrival crews confirmed the barn to be well alight with 300 tonnes of hay and a large amount of fertiliser involved in the fire.
The incident commander then called for more crews who were sent from Wincanton, Castle Cary, Yeovil and Sherborne.
A second water carrier was requested which came from Bridgwater, and the incident command unit from Street and the welfare unit from Burnham-on Sea were also sent.
By 10.15pm, there were two fire appliances and a water bowser still at the incident as it was being scaled down.
The agricultural building measuring 30m by 25m - containing 300 tonnes of hay, 1.2 tonnes of fertiliser, a tractor, fertiliser spreader and a baler - was destroyed by fire. Two ground monitors were in use to prevent fire spread.
By 10.45pm, one ground monitor was in use cooling the remaining fertiliser and keeping a watching brief on the barn and the neighbouring thatch property.
The fire service completed a further revisit this morning to check the scene.
