Firefighters from Street were among multiple crews called to tackle a fire at a landfill site near Bridgwater yesterday afternoon (June 8).

Just after 4.30pm, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Control received a call from a waste site close to Bristol Road, near Bridgwater, reporting a fire involving the landfill.

Fire engines from Bridgwater were quickly mobilised to the scene and after initial investigation and firefighting, the incident was escalated.

Appliances from Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, Taunton, Martock, Nether Stowey and Street attended the scene.

The fire involved general waste and measured approximately 20 by 20 metres.

The fire was capped by on-site diggers and crews used three main jets to prevent fire spread.

Crews also attended a second time in the evening to ensure the fire was completely out. The cause is believed to be accidental.
