Street FC travelled to the south coast town of Bridport last night (September 8) for their first away game of the new season, and came away with a 1-0 win thanks to an Ed Butcher strike.
After a good point at home to Shepton Mallet on Saturday, spirits were high. This fixture last season was cancelled by Covid-19.
Unfortunately the management had to work hard to get a team together as five key players could not travel.
Street started very brightly and created three good chances in the first 15 minutes. Bridport where pinned into their own half.
It was on 19 minutes when some class from Butcher, back for his first game at Street, got into the Bridport box and drove a left-foot shot into Bridport's net.
The game then changed and the tempo dropped. Bridport defended with more confidence - Street created a few half chances and Bridport fired one shot over Street's goal.
The half finished at 1-0 to Street with the travelling fans not getting their hopes of a two-goal lead.
The second half continued in the same vain, with both teams making mistakes. Bridport produced their best chances with a headed opportunity over the Street bar.
Their best chance came central on goal where it was probably easier to score but the ball blasted over the goal and was probably retrieved from West Bay harbour.
Oscar latas gave Street their best chance with a individual piece of brilliance. Sending players the wrong way and scything his way through Bridport defence, sending goal keeper the wrong way, with a open goal and the ball heading to the back of the net a boot came from nowhere and the ball was cleared off the goal line.
The game fizzled out with the scoreline staying with that 19 minute goal as the only score. A great three points for Street and some relief for Bridport only conceding one goal.
Man of the match was shared by two of the Cobbers' young players fresh from their under-18s last year - Elliot Hegarty and Street's Under-18s captain this year Alessandro Costanza, who has had a great start to this season.
Just to mention also one player who stepped up from the Reserves and captain of the reserve team Toby Davey who played up front last night and must been pleased with his game.
Street go again this Saturday (September 12) at home to Roman Glass.
