Proposals to create an equestrian arena near Street have been given the green light by planners.

A planning application for the creation of an equestrian arena at West Park Farm, Sharpham Lane, in between Street, Walton, Ashcott and Sharpham, has been approved by Mendip District Council after being submitted by G Pople and Sons Ltd.

The creation of the arena will see some minor level changes in order to provide an even surface, and it would be surrounded by a post and rail fence.

In approving the proposals, the planning officer's report said: "The site lies outside of any defined settlement limits where development is strictly controlled.

"However, equestrian facilities are, for the most part, inherently associated with countryside locations and they form an established part of rural life, including the riding and keeping of horses for private recreational purposes.

"The proposal would have a low visual impact and would be largely screened by the existing buildings that form the farm complex."
