David Warburton, MP for Somerton and Frome, brought a life-sized cardboard cut out of Boris Johnson to Butleigh to accept a bespoke, hand-made dog bed for the Prime Minister's rescue Jack Russell cross, Dilyn, from pet accessory business Barka Parka.

Now owned by former veterinary nurse Emma Aitken and Richard Burdett, Barka Parka began in 1976 as a hobby for the Coffman sisters.

Janet Coffman, along with her sisters Marion and Brenda, created a new concept in pet bean bags - not only comfortable, but hard-wearing and easy to clean.

In 1979 they sold their first dog bed and after building a successful global business over 40 years, eventually decided to retire.

Emma and Richard took an interest in continuing Barka Parka, and acquired the business in January last year.

Barka Parka beds are the only pet bean-bag bed company in the UK to offer BioFoam beans. Imported from Holland, BioFoam beans are made from plant extract but retain the same properties as traditional polystyrene beans.

BioFoam beans are 100 per cent compostable and can be composted when the beans are replaced.

Emma said: "When Richard and I heard that Boris Johnson and Carrie Symonds had adopted a rescue Jack Russell cross, we wanted to offer the prime ministerial pup a comfortable, hard-wearing, luxury bed, fit for his new home in Downing Street.

"Hand-made, filled with compostable BioFoam beans and finished in Conservative blue with a removable, washable, durable cover, we're confident Dilyn will enjoy his new bed for many years to come."

Mr Warburton said: "Sadly the Prime Minister himself wasn't available to come and accept Dilyn's gift in person, so I was honoured to bring a life-sized, cardboard stand-in – surely the next best thing?

"I'm sure Dilyn will not only appreciate the comfort and style of his new bed, but also feel proud of its eco-friendly properties."
