Fire crews have been at the scene of a large blaze in a barn in Compton Dundon, where 30 tonnes of hay and an HGV vehicle were alight.
Fire appliances from Street and Glastonbury along with the water carrier from Bridgwater were mobilised just after 2.45am today (January 14) to a report of a fire in a barn on land near Reynald's Way.
On arrival at the incident fire crews requested a further appliance which was mobilised from Somerton. Crews confirmed one agricultural building well alight.
The barn, approximately six metres by 10 metres in size, contained approximately 30 tonnes of hay and an HGV vehicle, and the contents were well alight. Crews got to work with a compressed air foam jet to prevent further fire spread.
Fire crews allowed the contents of the barn to burn out to protect adjacent buildings and a slurry tank from further risk.
The barn also contained 50 tonnes of woodchip and six to eight tonnes of used tyres. Crews protected the tyres with an attack jet and used two further attack jets to protect the other buildings.
By 6.10am, steady progress had been made by the owner who was moving unaffected tyres with a telehandler.
Crews are still at work with three attack jets, and a two pump relief crew has been mobilised from Yeovil and Castle Cary.
