Cadwell Park Race Report from Street based motorcycle racer

Last weekend saw the latest rounds of the NG Road Racing Championships at Cadwell Park in Lincolnshire.

Cadwell Park is fondly nicknamed the 2.2 mile 'mini-Nürburgring' and has hosted racing for over 85 years.

It's twisty and undulating nature, winding through open park and woodland, has marked it out as one of the best circuits in the country. The circuit is one of the most popular destinations on the British Superbike calendar for both riders and spectators, with the infamous 'Mountain' section, which riders usually tackle airborne, providing a particular challenge.

The track is so much more than just the mountain. Every corner demands respect, and the final section of the lap under the trees can often be the downfall of many as it is very tight and often stays damp under the trees after rain !!

We completed the test day in very warm conditions changing the gearing slightly on the DS Racing Kawasaki #23 ZX10R to get better drive out of the corners.

Throughout the weekend, air temperatures were approx 31 degrees and track temperatures around the mid 40's which made it almost unbearable to complete full race distance and stay hydrated and I had to spend most of the time before the races in front of an industrial fan to try and stay cool before we were called to the grid.

Qualifying Saturday morning was a frantic 12 minute session staying out until the final moments to claim 6th in class on the grid.

Race 1 on Saturday, the hottest day of the year is certainly hard going racing a motorbike on one of the most physical tracks in the country.

I got a good start with 34 other riders fighting for positions and had a race long battle with 2 other riders with a close 'elbows out' battle on the last lap exchanging places at every corner but eventually coming home in 8th position, slightly disappointed not to win the battle with Tyson Lewis but in the extreme heat, I was happy to settle for good points and setting a faster lap time than the next three rivals ahead of me which was encouraging.

Race 2 on Sunday morning was another boiling experience with another close battle amongst rivals but I was left feeling frustrated as one of my rivals out-braked himself into the chicane causing him to miss the chicane and gaining an unfair advantage and gaining a position over me and not allowing me to re pass him, this should've carried a time penalty for missing part of the circuit but because the marshals 'didn't see it' his result were allowed to stand, very frustrating so had to settle for 10th in class.

Race 3, the bike didn't launch very well and jerked on the line, the first bad start of the weekend as my starts are slowly getting better, I made good progress and the end of the first lap and managed to claw back positions to cross the line in 9th position in class.

All in all it could've been better but considering the scorching temperatures, I got good solid points in the championship. I broke my PB lap time by 0.648 seconds and made more progress with the track knowledge and bike setup.

As always I would like to thank my loyal sponsors Simon Lane and Steve Whitear of HEL Performance, Andy Forbes-Buckingham of AFB Motorcycles, Dan Lou Howley of Twosixfit Gym & Fitness Centre, Paul Redmore & Judith Redmore of P J Parcels, Mark Hawks of MPH Telecom, Adi Sully of Vehicle Life Support, John Holdsworth of R&Ts Fish Bar Glastonbury Limited, Roger Stacey of RA Stacey Plant Hire Ltd, Julie Williams of Ambrosini Construction Group, Carl Woodward of Woodward Insurance and Mortgage Services Ltd, Nigel Eddleston-Dike & Julie Eddleston Dike of EDP Photo News, Opie Oils, ParSigns and all at the DS Racing Kawasaki #23 Club 23 for all your support. Championship position is joint 5th out of 27.

Next round is Oulton Park in Cheshire.
