Street resident Stan Nicholls celebrated his 100th birthday on Friday (May 1) with friends, neighbours and family, making sure to keep to the current safety restrictions.

Many people will remember Stan from his days in running the sports shop in the Crispin Centre in Street, together with his brother Roy.

Stan was a flight engineer on the Lancaster Bombers, running test flights with the Barns Wallace flight crew during the Second World War, and on a previous birthday was treated to a day out visiting one of the last Lancasters still flying, and enjoyed being back at the controls.

His neighbours and family in Street were determined not to let the occasion pass without celebrating and organised flyers to let everyone know Stan would be 100.

They put up banners and bunting to decorate Stan's front garden so everyone could gather to sing Happy Birthday and present him with presents, cakes and bottles of bubbly.
