The West End Fish Bar in Street will reopen today (Thursday May 14) with a one-way system in place to keep customers and staff safe.

The fish and chip shop has introduced click and collect to avoid any unnecessary queuing and waiting.

At the moment the working week could change weekly, but initially will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

John and Cher Sturgess are the third generation of their family to run West End Fish Bar, and they have put a number of measures in place to combat coronavirus.

They told Street Nub News: "We have followed guidelines and guidance from the government and the National Federation of Fish Friers.

"We have ensured that when we reopen there is a one-way system and no access to the inside of our shop. The information from the authorities we have found informative and helpful."

The one-way system is set up in the parking spaces to the front of the takeaway, with standing spots marked out on the ground.

West End Fish Bar was first established in 1949. Keith arrived in Street with his dad Jack and mum Elsie in 1962 to take over the shop.

Keith still works in the shop today, mainly with preparation, and clearing and cleaning up.

John and Cher say that the decision to close during lockdown was not a difficult one to make.

"No amount of money is worth more than the health of our family, relatives, friends, staff and customers," they said.

And they wanted to thank local residents for their support and understanding at this difficult time.

They said: "Thank you for your continued support and we really appreciate your comments about our shop.

"The only request we would have at the moment is please stay safe and use our click and collect to avoid waiting for your food to be cooked."
