A minute's silence was held at Mendip District Council's Cabinet on Monday (September 6) to remember former Street councillor Ralph Clark.

Mr Clark was the first chairman of Mendip District Council between 1974 and 1976.

He was Mendip district councillor and county councillor for Street for many years, and was well-known across the whole district.

Cllr Ros Wyke, leader of Mendip District Council, paid tribute and said: "We were saddened to hear of the passing of Ralph Clark.

"Our heartfelt condolences go out to his family, friends, fellow councillors, and the whole Street community where he served for many years.

"Ralph's impact on local people and politics in Mendip cannot be overstated. He was there when this council was first set up in the 1970s.

"We were fortunate to have him at Mendip, and locally in Street of course, but his presence was felt throughout the wider community.

"He worked tirelessly for local justice, and for good causes, including at Musgrove Hospital in Taunton and his much-loved local Strode Theatre in Street.

"He chaired and vice-chaired numerous committees and was made Honorary Alderman of Somerset County Council in February 2018, demonstrating the esteem in which he was held by his colleagues and community.

"He was generous with his time and mentored many young activists on the first rung of their political careers, and offered wise words and encouragement to anyone who reached out for his guidance.

"Ralph had a great sense of duty and a wide range of interests. But most of all, he loved people.

"Thank you Ralph. You will be missed by so many of us."
